The 6 best boiler brands and how to pick one that’s right for your home

Confused about which brand of boiler to choose?

Comparing boilers can seem complicated, worse than trying to choose a dessert from a glass display cabinet filled with a mouth-watering selection of sweet treats.

Firstly, decide what type of boiler you need.

Combi Boilers

These are a type of condensing boiler. They combine water and central heating, making them compact.

System Boilers

This is another type of condensing boiler, but it needs a water cylinder which makes them better for homes with more than one bathroom.

Conventional Boilers

These boilers are known as heat only boilers and are best for homes that already have a heating and hot water system linked to a hot water cylinder.

Oil and LPG Boilers

These boilers are for homes that aren’t or can’t be connected to gas mains. Oil or LPG needs to be delivered to your home on a regular basis.

If you’re boiler is ten years old or more then you might want to look at updating it. The older your boiler, the less efficient it will be, and the more it’s costing you in energy bills.

It’s time to replace your boiler if:

  • It breaks down frequently
  • It’s noisy (noisier than usual)
  • It smells
  • It takes too long to heat your home
  • Your energy bills keep going up.

Are boilers going to be banned?

Maybe you’re panicking after hearing about a gas and oil boiler ban. Don’t worry, this is only for new builds from 2025.

The government has said no one will be forced to remove their existing fossil fuel boiler with a low-carbon alternative.

By replacing your gas or oil boiler with a new one, it will be more energy efficient, so it will heat your home better, reduce your bills, and it’s better for the planet.

A lot of modern boilers can be converted to run of more renewable fuel sources if the time comes to do this.

How to Choose a Boiler

There are several factors to consider when purchasing a new boiler.

Boiler Warranty or Guarantee

Some brands call it a warranty, some a guarantee. There is a slight difference (the guarantee is better), but both mean they will repair your boiler if it breaks down within a certain time.

The longer your warranty or guarantee, the less likely you will have to pay for repairs.

Longer warranties indicate how confident a brand is that their boilers have a long-life expectancy otherwise they would be out a lot of money.

Warranties are usually only valid if a branded engineer is used to install the boiler, it is serviced once a year, and it is registered within 30 days.

Boiler prices

How far your money can stretch is a big factor in choosing a boiler.

A new boiler can cost between £2500 and £3800 for an internal, heat-only boiler, and between £3400 and £4500 for an internal combi boiler.

There are, however, flexible payment schemes and government home energy grants to consider.

It is not only the upfront cost that you need to take into account, but the running cost too.

The average running cost for a gas boiler starts at £90 per month and an oil boiler costs around £83 per month.

Space for a boiler

How much space you have to house a boiler will dictate what size of boiler you can get.

If you live in a flat or small property, a combi boiler which will fit in a cupboard out of the way will be better.

Boiler efficiency rating

New boilers carry an ErP energy label which rank it from A to G. Most new boilers will have an A rating but there is also a SEDBUK rating system which gives a percentage, making it easier to see which boiler is more efficient. For new boilers it will range from 80% to over 90%. The more energy efficient your boiler is, the less heat is wasted and the more money you save.
