Add Heat are OFTEC registered oil boiler installation, service & repair experts based in Cheadle, Cheshire, covering Stockport and Manchester too.
Many of our customers across Cheshire are in rural locations and have chosen an oil fired boiler for their central heating. Oil boilers require servicing & maintenance just as gas boilers do – keeping your oil boiler maintained helps it to stay free of breakdowns and operate efficiently, saving you money in the long run.
How Do Oil Boilers Work?
Oil boilers burn oil for fuel, instead of gas or LPG. They then use this to provide heat for a central heating system in much the same way as any other boiler does. Oil can power combination heating systems, regular conventional or system boilers and take their water supply from the mains or a storage tank.
Oil central heating systems heat radiators, showers and hot water taps in just the same was as other boilers, efficiently delivering heat and hot water around the home.
Oil fired boilers require an oil tank to store the oil. The tanks will need regular filling from an oil tanker which will use a hose to fill the oil tank from the truck. How often the tank needs filling will depend on how much oil you use and the size of the tank, so be sure to take advice on this before installation.
Oil tanks need to comply with UK building regulations. OFTEC (Oil Firing Technical Association) provide details on current regulations for oil fired central heating systems.
How Far Does my Oil Tank Need to be From my House?
Your oil tank needs to be situated as follows:
- 8m away from non-fire rated eaves of a building
- 8m away from a non-fire rated building or structure (e.g. garden sheds)
- 8m away from openings (such as doors or windows) in a fire rated building or structure (e.g. brick built house/garage)
- 8m away from oil fired appliance flue terminals
- 760mm away from a non-fire rated boundary such as a wooden boundary fence
- 600mm away from screening (e.g. trellis and foliage) that does not form part of the boundary.
Oil prices can fluctuate, so it’s best to shop around for the best deal for your oil supply.
