An insight into boiler types and the homes for which they are suitable
Combination boilers (also known as Combi boilers)
This boiler type performs for both water heating and central heating.
As you draw water from the tap Combi boilers heat it. There is no need for a water storage tank due to the boiler being connected straight into the water main. This means it will only heat the water as you need it!
The types of homes that are the best for combination boilers
Combination boilers are energy efficient, cost effective and compact. They do not need a water storage tank (usually located withing the loft space) or a hot water cylinder. This makes them a great option for residences with not a lot of free space. The combination boiler is one of the most popular types in the UK currently.
System boilers
System boilers are also sometimes called sealed system boilers. They need a water cylinder to store the hot water. They do not however need a water tank in the loft space. The heating system is built into the boiler which is unlike regular boiler systems.
The types of homes that are the best for system boilers
System boilers are a good option where a residence has more than one bathroom. They will provide a supply of heated water to a number of taps around the property at the same time.
Regular boilers (also known as open vent)
Regular Boilers are also known sometimes as open vent, gravity fed or heat only. The central heating they provide and the hot water is via a hot water storage cylinder. The cylinder is usually stored in an airing cupboard with the cold water tank being contained within the loft space.
The types of homes that are the best for vent boiler
If your home is one with multiple bathrooms then an open vent boiler is a good choice due to its ability to give a lot of hot water at the same time. An open vent boiler works well when you are replacing an older open vent based heating system. These are also well suited if water pressure is low in your area.
